Brand New Flava In Your Ear: MORE LIFE by Drake
As Issa Rae worded it on Insecure in reference to Drake, " He just really gets us." I have to concur, he just might have us pegged. The anticipated summer anthem album More Life debut on March 18, 2017. It took some time to conduct a review because I wanted to explore every song in the 22-track composition.
I have a pretty simple process of listening to a new album. Initially, I play the album in it's entirety once. I make note of songs that make me emotional or cause a response (dance, sway, laugh, cry, or smile). I jot them down and revisit them later. Then, I spin my initial favorites repeatedly. Interestingly enough, follow up songs to my favorites tend to slip into my "likable" song category and I grow to enjoy them, too. All that to say I have love for a few of his songs that may not be in a typical top five category.
I want to share my enamored love for "Get It Together" featuring Jorja Smith. Oh, if only these boys would get themselves together, so we could get together. The song is filled with base and rooted in house beats. It's my number one choice. My first likable song is Madiba Riddim because it's catchy and seems like the kind of song you two-step to. It's a feel good song about knowing yourself and those you keep in your company. Next, I want to share that I'm completely feeling Blem. Flirtatious and seductive mellow song. Something you play to set the mood. Passionfruit made it on the list because it's a two-step song. Couples-on-the-dance-floor kind if track.
Teenage Fever with the "If You Had My Love" J.Lo sample didn't do as much for me as 4422. Both are seductive turndowns, but 4422 pulled at my heartstrings. Sampha croons for me softly in 4422. His voice is a brand all its own, when you hear him you know. I also, favorited Lose You. Drake is constantly reminded trolls that he is smart, capable and not to be insulted. I relish in his trash talking shenanigans. I want to thank Drake for putting Kanye on a song properly titled, Glow. Kanye's verse was the best, reminded me of his College Dropout days. And if there's a trash talking king, Kanye wears the crown. I caught myself rewinded his verse repeatedly. On a final note, my final likable song from More Life is Ice Melts featuring Young Thug. It's a fun song that sounds like summer vacation in the islands. It's fun and lighthearted, and a cheeky.
Ladies, get your bodies in a gym. Drake dropped a back-popping, club-grooving, compilation, that promotes you going on vacation and flexing your sexiness. On a scale of 1-5, I'd give it a 4. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 is because I listen to less than half the 22 songs listed. But, the songs I do like, I love.
