Shoecabulary: Mary Janes

Mary Jane: is a shoe with a strap across the instep that is attached with elastic, Velcro, or buckle.

Mary Jane shoes were never my favorite style of shoe growing up. Frankly, it was due to lack of larger size availability in little girl sizes. Thus, I went hunting for a pair in women's size only to find the ones I liked were heels and my mother was not for it. As a result, MJ and I have not been the best of friends.

But, now all that has changed. I have fallen in like with her. Why? Well, the Mary Jane is essentially a flat or pump with an additional strap across the instep for more foot stability. This means one can have a sturdier walking commute (if you live in NY). Not to mention, they look simple, yet professional and work well as a work shoe.
